I love television.
I always have.
When I was younger, I would race home from school to turn the television on. At that time, I loved Superhero cartoons in the early afternoon. Each day would feature a 30 minute cartoon focused on a story involving a different hero - Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, SubMariner (does anyone remember him?) and on Fridays, my favourite, Thor.
At night, I loved watching all the popular television shows from the 70's. Happy Days, M*A*S*H, Laverne & Shirley, Welcome Back Kotter or the madcap antics of Robin Williams on Mork & Mindy.
Obviously, I've grown up. I don't watch nearly as many situation comedies and I don't watch super hero cartoons at all. I like drama a lot more than I did. My favourite shows of the past few years have been Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Mad Men and Better Call Saul. I've also learned to love competition shows, like Survivor and Big Brother. I guess I do watch a few animation series and some comedy. I like Rick and Morty, The Simpsons & Bob's Burgers as well as Arrested Development, Modern Family, 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live.
I guess the thing I like most about television is the escape. I can relax and immerse myself in the story. It allows me to unwind and turn off the creative part of my brain for awhile. It helps me settle so that I can be ready to sleep. I also like being able to talk about my favourite shows with friends who watch the same ones. It is great fun to debate the decisions I would have made on Survivor or the reasons behind a character's decision on Game of Thrones. Maybe just getting a chance to laugh when I remember a fantastic joke from Rick & Morty. What are your favourite shows and why do you like watching them so much. Please let me know in the comments below.
